Tasting Notes

Cocoa, cedar, and a quiet white-pepper note across the first third. The middle settles into espresso and dried fig — long, dense smoke that holds its shape on the draw. Near the band the cigar turns sweet, a deep raisin and brown-sugar finish that holds for the better part of ten minutes after the cigar is down.

Strength: Medium-Full. Burn: 60–80 minutes. Pairs with: Highland Park 15, Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned, East Nashville Roasters black.

Origin & Blend

A Nicaraguan puro rolled in Estelí under a private label that ships to Briarwood twelve cases at a time. The wrapper is a Cuban-seed Habano grown in the Jalapa Valley, aged four years before blending. The binder is a Nicaraguan Jalapa leaf; the filler is a four-vintage Nicaraguan blend pulled from Estelí, Jalapa, and Condega.

Wrapper: Cuban-seed Habano (Nicaragua, Jalapa)
Binder: Nicaraguan, Jalapa
Filler: Nicaraguan, four-vintage — Estelí · Jalapa · Condega

Pairings

The Reserve is built around a cocoa-and-cedar core, which means it pairs with anything that lengthens rather than sharpens the finish. Three standing pours from the back bar:

  • Highland Park 15 — heather smoke, dried orange. Cuts the cocoa.
  • Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned — flamed orange peel. Adds depth.
  • East Nashville Roasters black — single-origin, no cream, no sugar.
The Distributor Story

The Reserve started as a personal cigar Marcus Hale was rolling for his own humidor in 2011. By 2012 he was bringing one to every Thursday tasting and members were asking where to buy them. By 2013 we were buying ten cases from a roller named Esteban in Estelí; by 2018 we had a private label and a standing order with the family farm.

The current arrangement: twelve cases per release, two releases per year, no national distribution. The blend has been the same since 2018 — Esteban's son does the rolling now, and the filler vintages rotate with the harvest. We don't sell the Reserve wholesale and we don't ship it to anyone who isn't on the Briarwood roster.

21+ Policy & Shipping

21+ only. We verify age at the lounge with a valid government-issued ID, and at checkout for shipped orders. Adult signature is required at delivery — no exceptions, no porch drops.

The Reserve ships to every U.S. state where local law permits adult tobacco sale. Tennessee tax + signature handling are included in shipping ($24). Members ship first; the general roster ships on a one-week delay.

"The Reserve started in my own humidor. Then in James's. Then on the Thursday board. Now it's a private-label arrangement with a family in Jalapa and a one-line description on the back of every box: rolled for Briarwood. Nothing about it has gone above that."

From the back bar

Three standing pours for the Reserve.

What James and Marcus pour alongside the Reserve without being asked. Order any of them at the bar — or have a bottle shipped alongside the cigars.

Highland Park 15

Heather smoke, dried orange. The Thursday standing pour.

Orkney single malt aged in sherry and refill American oak. The dry orange and gentle peat hold up against the Reserve's cocoa middle without overwhelming the cap. We pour it neat, in a Glencairn, with a small pitcher of room-temperature water for the second half.

Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned

Demerara sugar, Angostura, flamed orange. Built behind the bar from 4pm.

James builds these to-order. Buffalo Trace, demerara sugar dissolved in a teaspoon of warm water, two dashes of Angostura, a flamed orange peel. The peel's oils land on the cigar's wrapper as you draw — the finish is the cocktail and the cigar at once.

East Nashville Roasters black

Single-origin, no cream, no sugar. After-dinner pour.

We've poured the Roasters' rotating single-origin since 2014. Current bag is an Ethiopian Sidamo — bright at the cup, dense in the cigar. Brewed strong, served black, taken in the front room with the lights down.

The arrangement

Twelve cases. Twice a year. Lounge-only.

The Reserve has no national distribution and there isn't going to be. The blend goes from a single family farm in Jalapa to a roller in Estelí to Briarwood — twelve cases per release, two releases per year. Members get a heads-up the morning the cases clear customs; the general roster sees them on the shelf the following week.

The cellar carries a small allocation of older vintages — currently the 2018 and 2020 boxes, kept at the cellar's 68/68 set-point. Ask Marcus at the counter; he keeps a list.
